Amazon Warns Blocking AI Data Centers Risks 'Irreparable Harm' to US Economy
Amazon has published a lengthy blog post urging communities to support its AI data center projects, warning that blocking them could cause irreparable harm to the US economy and national security.
The company's web services CEO Matt Garman wrote in the over 3,000-word post that the build-out of data centers is crucial for the country's AI dominance. He stated, 'With any change, there will be important questions raised, but there will also be misinformation and outright lies, and in the age of social media and 24/7 news, myths take hold faster than ever before.'
Gorman mentioned that various countries are intentionally seeding misinformation about data centers to trick the US into slowing down. He emphasized that this is not just an issue for the US but has geopolitical implications.
The blog post also highlighted Amazon's 'Data Center Commitment' which includes practices such as creating jobs, preventing increases in local energy rates, and investing over $1 billion in neighboring communities. Additionally, the company announced it would no longer use nondisclosure agreements with government agencies after being probed by Democratic lawmaker Jamie Raskin.
