Amazon Web Services Expands in Louisiana with Third Data Center
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is expanding its presence in Louisiana by building a third data center at Resilient Technology Park in west Shreveport, just six months after announcing plans for two other facilities. The new investment will create an additional $6 billion worth of infrastructure and approximately 750 permanent jobs, on top of the 2,200 temporary construction positions that will be created.
Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Susan Bourgeois expressed confidence in Amazon's decision to invest further in the state, citing a positive experience with the local workforce. 'A global company like Amazon has such a positive experience with the Louisiana workforce, with the Louisiana functionality, with the way we've delivered on this project that, within six months' time, they decided to spend another $6 billion; and that's a Louisiana story that we want to tell,' Bourgeois said.
The three data centers are expected to rely on air cooling for most of the year, using water for cooling only when temperatures exceed 85 degrees. Amazon has also committed to investing up to $400 million in public water infrastructure and is working with SWEPCO to fully fund new energy infrastructure.
