Amazon Web Services Inks $1 Billion Deal for Custom AI Chips
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has signed a multi-year agreement worth over $1 billion with Synopsys to design custom AI chips. This deal positions AWS as a leading customer for Synopsys silicon IP tailored for AI data center workloads, indicating ongoing commercial use of Synopsys technology in AWS's in-house silicon.
The agreement includes both licensing and royalty components, which means AWS will have access to customized chip designs from Synopsys. This move is part of a broader effort by AWS to support its growing commerce, media, and software footprint with more specialized infrastructure.
Analysts warn that heavy AI and cloud capex could eventually improve returns for Amazon.com as AWS sells higher-margin services on top of its infrastructure. However, this deal also raises capital intensity concerns for AWS, particularly if regulatory questions on tax breaks and data centers make recouping the spend slower or harder.
