Amazonian Oasis: Siona Lodge Offers Unforgettable Jungle Experience
A small group of adventurers traveled to the remote Siona Lodge in Ecuador's Amazon region. They took a two-hour boat ride down the Cuyabeno River, which passes through the 2,300-square-mile Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including blue iridescent morpho butterflies, monkeys, and toucans.
The group stayed in one of five duplex bungalows at Siona Lodge, each with a palm frond roof that blends seamlessly into the jungle surroundings. During their stay, they participated in various excursions, including a sunrise birdwatching expedition, a nighttime search for caimans, two jungle hikes, and daily sunset swims.
One of the highlights of their trip was a visit to a Siona Indian village, where they met with the village leader, who is also the region's shaman. The shaman demonstrated one of his healing rituals by gently striking our writer with a bundle of medicinal leaves while chanting. The group also had the opportunity to learn about the local way of life and try some traditional foods.
As their four-day stay at Siona Lodge came to an end, a 7-foot caiman crawled ashore next to their pier, providing a fitting finale to their unforgettable experience in this wilderness paradise.
