Amazon's $2,080 Annual Wage Hike for U.S. Workers Sparks Share Price Reaction
Amazon's minimum wage hike for U.S.-based full-time workers took effect on Wednesday, increasing from $19 to $20 per hour. According to Reuters, this change applies to qualifying employees across Amazon's operations network.
The revised hourly rate translates into a roughly 5.3% increase in annual base pay, from $39,520 to $41,600 for a standard 40-hour workweek. This bump comes with the introduction of lower-cost banking services and an average compensation package that exceeds $32 per hour for eligible core-operations employees.
Amazon's second-quarter revenue topped $200.6 billion, while operating income reached $27.5 billion. However, investors are uncertain about the total expense of this wage increase due to the lack of clarity on how many workers will receive the higher floor.
The stock slipped approximately 0.5% to $247.20 following the announcement, putting it just below its estimated fair value of $248.57. This suggests that investors are pricing Amazon close to its perceived worth while awaiting signs of improved operational efficiency from higher labor spending.
