Amazon's Anthropic Stake Skyrockets to $190 Billion
Amazon's $13 billion investment in Anthropic is rapidly gaining value. The e-commerce giant initially invested $8 billion in 2024 and followed up with another $5 billion this year, giving Amazon a 21% stake in the AI startup.
The initial valuation of Anthropic at the end of the first quarter was approximately $353 billion, but after raising $65 billion in a fundraising round in late May, its value jumped to $965 billion. This rapid growth is driven by strong demand for Anthropic's Claude AI, which has already secured customers such as Cognizant Technology Solutions, IBM, and Deloitte.
Amazon's stake in Anthropic has grown dramatically, with convertible notes valued at $97.9 billion and nonvoting preferred stock valued at $92.5 billion, giving Amazon a total stake of $190.4 billion. If Anthropic were to go public, its value could increase even further, potentially reaching up to $252 billion.
This valuation represents a 14.6x gain in Amazon's initial investment and has contributed significantly to the company's net income, which reached $62.64 billion for the second quarter. The growth of Anthropic's value is also expected to benefit Amazon, as it will continue to provide cloud computing services to the AI startup.
