Amazon's Carrie Tackles Cyberbullying in Chilling Reimagining
Amazon's new series Carrie is an unsettling reimagining of Stephen King's classic horror tale. The show, directed by Mike Flanagan, captures the terror and drama that has made the story so enduring while updating it for modern audiences.
The story follows Carietta White, better known as Carrie, a sheltered teenager who begins attending high school after her father's death forces her and her mother to reenter society. As she navigates this new world, Carrie is met with harsh realities of the world, including cyberbullying, which ultimately awakens her telekinetic powers.
The show expands on the story, incorporating modern themes such as social media and online harassment. When Carrie is embarrassed in gym class, the incident gets filmed and leads to the creation of an anonymous Instagram account that bullies her and the whole school. The consequences are severe, and Margaret, Carrie's mother, becomes a 'parents' rights activist,' fighting against the account with tactics eerily similar to those of right-wing influencers.
Flanagan is no stranger to using classic horror to explore modern issues. His previous works, such as The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass, have tackled topics like the opioid epidemic. Carrie's modern twists feel natural and heighten the story's darkness, making it just as terrifying as its predecessors.
