Amazon's Cloud Service, AWS, Drives Profits and Growth
Amazon's cloud service, AWS, is driving the company's profits and growth. In Q2, AWS accounted for about 21% of Amazon's revenue but generated 60% of its operating income. This discrepancy is due to the higher profit margins of cloud computing compared to Amazon's commerce divisions.
AWS is also growing significantly faster than Amazon's other businesses, with a 37% revenue increase in Q2, outpacing North American commerce sales by 16% and international sales by 15%. This pattern suggests that AWS will continue to be a key driver of Amazon's success.
Amazon is investing heavily in data centers to meet the growing demand for computing power. CEO Andy Jassy noted that the company won't have enough capacity available until at least 2027, and there is already a massive backlog of $496 billion.
