Amazon's Latest Bay Area Layoffs Cut Deep

Amazon is cutting around 150 positions at its Northern California offices in a move that has raised concerns about the tech giant's treatment of employees. According to an August 28 notice filed with the Employment Development Department, 70 jobs will be eliminated at Amazon's Sunnyvale office and 78 positions at the company's Bush Street office in San Francisco will also be cut. The affected employees are slated to be out by October 20.

This latest round of job cuts comes as part of CEO Andy Jassy's effort to flatten management structures and reduce bureaucracy, with roughly 30,000 corporate jobs cut since October 2025 through two major rounds of layoffs. In June, Amazon engineers accused the company of pouring billions into AI-fueled data centers while slashing tens of thousands of white-collar jobs.

Amazon is allegedly spending $200 billion on data centers and AI, with some critics arguing that this investment comes at the expense of its employees. The job cuts primarily target corporate and management ranks by trimming management positions by 20% and cutting 'micro-teams' with few direct reports.
