Amazon's Mercury Initiative: A Plan to Redraw the Map of American Retail
Amazon is planning an ambitious expansion of its same-day delivery operation through Project Mercury. By 2031, Amazon aims to increase its same-day fulfillment network to over 1,000 locations from around 85 facilities today.
The project, which will cost billions of dollars, seeks to fundamentally redesign the same-day delivery network by placing facilities within a 10-mile straight-line radius of 80% of Prime subscribers in the US. This proximity is crucial for Amazon's push into groceries and everyday essentials.
Currently, Walmart has thousands of stores near most US consumers, giving it an advantage in the fight over groceries and other everyday purchases. However, Amazon believes its plan can rewrite the rules of everyday retail by getting popular inventory closer to customers through hundreds of new Same Day Fulfillment Centers (SSDs).
