AMD-Nvidia Valuation Gap Widens as Investors Are Left to Choose
The valuation of Nvidia and AMD has reached an unprecedented split in the industry, with AMD being more expensive despite Nvidia's larger market share and faster growth. This unusual situation raises questions about which stock investors should prioritize.
A look at historical examples shows that when two companies compete in the same industry, they typically have similar valuations. However, this is not the case for Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and AMD (NASDAQ: AMD).
Nvidia's dominance in the market is evident from its data center division, which generated $89 billion of its total revenue of $96.2 billion in Q2. This high demand for Nvidia's premium products allows it to charge a higher price and make significant profits.
In contrast, AMD has a different business model with a lower-margin Client & Gaming division making up a larger share of its revenue. As a result, AMD will never be able to match Nvidia's profit margins without a fundamental change in its operations.
When using forward earnings projections, the difference between the two companies becomes even more apparent, with Nvidia appearing significantly cheaper than AMD. This price mismatch may be an opportunity for investors to buy shares of Nvidia.
