AMD Unveils Instinct MI455X: A Challenger to Nvidia's Rubin Architecture
AMD has released its new AI GPU, Instinct MI455X, to compete with Nvidia's Rubin architecture. The company claims that this new flagship processor is designed for large-scale AI training and inference, boasting specs that almost match or surpass those of the Rubin GPU.
The Instinct MI455X features 320 billion transistors, 432GB of HBM4 memory, and up to 40 petaflops of FP4 AI compute. This is significant because it exceeds the memory bandwidth of Nvidia's Rubin architecture, which has 288GB of HBM4 memory.
The new processor is built on AMD's CDNA 5 architecture, representing a major redesign of its accelerators. It incorporates advanced chiplet design connected with 3D hybrid bonding and introduces improvements in tensor processing, cache bandwidth, memory movement, and execution efficiency.
The Instinct MI455X will begin shipping at the end of the third quarter of 2026, with volume ramping through the fourth quarter and into the first half of 2027. It will power AMD's Helios rack-scale AI platform, which links up to 72 GPUs into a unified system.
While it remains to be seen whether this new GPU will help AMD gain ground in the market, it certainly narrows the hardware gap with Nvidia and offers competitive AI compute alongside substantially more memory.
