American Airlines Flight Diverted to LAX After Technical Issue Over Arctic Circle
An American Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was forced to divert from its planned route from New York to Tokyo after encountering a technical issue near the Arctic circle. The flight, AA167, took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport at 10:45 AM EDT on September 23 and climbed to its cruising altitude of 34,000 feet.
After five hours in the air, the crew identified the malfunction and initiated a sharp left turn back toward the continental United States. Instead of landing at nearby hubs like Vancouver or Seattle, the aircraft was directed to fly south all the way to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
The plane remained airborne for over 10 hours before landing safely at LAX shortly after 5:00 PM PDT on September 23. The stranded passengers are scheduled to resume their journey to Tokyo Haneda Airport later that day.
