American Express Doubles Global Card Acceptance in Four Years
American Express has seen significant growth in its global acceptance over the past four years. The company's credit cards can now be used at over 190 million merchant locations worldwide, with acceptance outside of America doubling during this time.
Historically, Visa and Mastercard have been accepted by more merchants outside the U.S. and enjoy greater scale in international markets. American Express is working to close this gap by strengthening its presence in popular destinations such as Barcelona, Hong Kong, and Paris.
The company has also been targeting locations that are popular for big events like sports, with a focus on Mexico City and Melbourne. By increasing the number of places where its cards can be used, American Express aims to drive spending globally, particularly among younger consumers.
