American Express Expands Blockchain-Powered Travel Stamps
Amex Passport, a digital travel experience built on blockchain technology, has expanded to allow American Express cardholders to generate digital stamps for qualifying trips dating back to 2019. This move allows customers to build a broader digital record of their international travel history.
The concept was initially introduced as an in-app environment where customers could test experimental features through American Express' Digital Labs innovation unit, which works with teams across the organization to turn promising concepts into customer-facing pilots.
A survey commissioned by American Express found that 73% of adults wanted additional ways to digitally commemorate their international travels, inspiring the idea for Amex Passport. The program uses blockchain to create and track collectible travel stamps based on customers' card activity, with the collection growing into one of the largest non-fungible token collections on Base, a blockchain network.
Amex Passport demonstrates American Express' use of emerging technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence to transform ordinary card transactions into digital travel collectibles. The company's approach emphasizes testing products in real-world settings rather than developing technology solely as a theoretical exercise.
