American Express Reports Modest Uptick in August Delinquency Rates
American Express has released its August card delinquency and write-off rates for U.S. Consumer and U.S. Small Business Card balances.
The credit card giant reported a 30-day delinquency rate of 1.1% for total U.S. Consumer Card balances, which stood at $114.2 billion as of August 31, 2026. This rate remained unchanged from the prior two months.
In terms of write-offs, American Express saw a net write-off rate of 1.7% in both August and July for principal only, up from 1.4% in June. The company noted that it sold certain previously written-off card balances to a third party in June 2026, which reduced the net write-off rates by approximately 0.3% for U.S. Consumer and 0.1% for U.S. Small Business portfolios.
American Express also reported on its U.S. Small Business Card balances, totaling $46.1 billion in both August and July, with a 30-day delinquency rate of 1.3%. The net write-off rate for principal only stood at 2.2% in August and 2.6% in July.
The company's strong return on equity of 34% and current ratio of 1.55 underscore its solid financial position, despite the modest uptick in write-offs.
