American Express Taps Anna Marrs to Lead Agentic Commerce Charge
Anna Marrs, group president of global merchant and network services at American Express, is leading the company's path in agentic commerce. According to her, 'it's less about tech and more about trust.' This means that Amex card members must trust the agent and merchants need to know the transaction will work.
Marrs' team has expanded Amex's global merchant network to over 170 million locations, a 500% increase since 2017. The GMNS segment generated $4.9 billion in pretax income in 2025. Marrs reports directly to CEO Steve Squeri and is the most senior female business leader with P&L responsibility at Amex.
Amex is investing heavily in AI, including generative AI, and has acquired several companies, including Center, a software vendor, and launched Coinbase One Card, expanding its sales to digital markets. Marrs' team uses AI agents to automate tasks such as credit underwriting, fraud detection, and personalized customer service.
Marrs oversees the company's credit and fraud risk organization, which evaluates transactions to detect fraud and manage credit risk. Amex is relying on its closed loop model to monitor transactions and battle fraud in agentic commerce.
