Amex Expands Spanish Merchant Network by 250k
American Express is expanding its presence in Spain by adding over 250,000 new merchants to its network in 2025. The company has announced that it will be increasing acceptance of its cards across various sectors, including daily consumption, travel, dining, and premium experiences.
The agreements with major brands such as Alcampo, Maisons du Monde, Indigo, Volotea, and others will enable American Express to tap into a customer base with high purchasing power. According to the company's internal data, its cardholders in Spain spend an average of five times more per year than users of other payment cards.
The vice president and general director of the merchant area of American Express for Continental Europe, Julia López, stated that the goal is for American Express to be accepted both in everyday purchases and in travel, dining, and premium experiences. This expansion will provide merchants with access to a customer base with high purchasing power, differential consumption habits, and high purchase frequency.
The Tap & Go solution has also been extended to the entire Metro network of Madrid, further increasing the convenience for customers using American Express cards.
