When it comes to dividend-paying pharmaceutical companies, Amgen (AMGN) and Merck (MRK) are two of the top choices. However, a closer look at their financials reveals that Amgen is the better bet for income investors.

Amgen's dividend yield stands at 2.6%, significantly higher than Merck's 2.29%. Furthermore, Amgen has consistently raised its dividend by 6% annually, outpacing Merck's smaller step-ups.

The key difference between the two companies lies in their product portfolios and cash flow generation. Amgen boasts 17 blockbuster products, including Repatha and Evenity, which generated $3.5 billion in free cash flow in Q2 2026. In contrast, Merck relies heavily on its Keytruda franchise, which is facing peak penetration.

While Merck has a stronger balance sheet with lower leverage, Amgen's robust cash flow generation and diverse product portfolio make it the more attractive choice for dividend-focused investors.
