Amgen's Repatha Trial Aims to Cut Hidden Artery Plaque
Amgen is pushing to deepen evidence around its Repatha treatment for PCSK9 inhibitors. The company announced an update on their ongoing clinical study, a Phase 4 trial called 'A Trial Assessing the Effectiveness of Evolocumab in Reducing the Plaque Burden in Participants With Subclinical Atheroma.'
The trial tests whether adding Repatha to routine cholesterol care cuts hidden artery plaque more than usual care alone. It uses Evolocumab (Repatha), a PCSK9 inhibitor given by autoinjector every two weeks, added on top of standard lipid drugs.
The study has two parallel groups: Evolocumab plus routine care versus routine care alone. The primary goal is treatment impact on plaque volume rather than just lab numbers, making results easier to link to future event-driven outcomes.
This trial update reinforces Amgen's push to deepen evidence around Repatha, a core asset in the PCSK9 space. Strong plaque results could support broader use, improve pricing power, and lift sentiment versus rivals such as Sanofi and Regeneron.
