Android 17 has brought about a significant change to how audio works on Android devices. According to Ali, a consumer technology expert who spends more than a decade covering the field, this change affects not just Chrome but all apps and browsers. The issue was with background audio playing unexpectedly after switching tabs or moving to a different app.

This problem had been plaguing users for months, making it difficult to pinpoint where the audio was coming from, especially when multiple tabs were open. Android 17 has introduced 'Background Audio Hardening,' which requires apps to be visible on the screen or run a foreground service to play audio. This change aims to prevent apps that freeze in the background and resume playback unexpectedly.

The feature applies to every app, whether it was built for Android 17 or not. Without requesting audio focus or changing volume, the audio APIs fail silently instead of doing anything. Google built this feature to address network issues that cause apps to play audio without warning.
