Android Auto Opens Up Game Support to All Developers
Google has expanded game support on Android Auto to all developers, ending its beta phase. The move allows any developer to bring games to the car's display.
The feature was first introduced last year and currently includes around 30 games. Google notes that this is a good opportunity for developers to reach users during 'natural downtime', such as while waiting at a charging station or for a curbside order pickup.
To adapt their existing Android game, developers must declare support for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS, which are separate declarations. Games on Android Auto also need to recognize when the vehicle is parked or not, as games can only be played if the vehicle is parked. Additionally, games can support controllers on both Android Auto and Android Automotive.
Google's full documentation on what developers need to do can be found here, and the company notes that around 30 games are available today but this list will likely expand soon.
