Angelina Jolie Brings Gaza Destruction into Focus on Google Earth
Angelina Jolie has highlighted the devastating destruction of Gaza using satellite images on Google Earth. The actress, who served as a UN Goodwill Ambassador and Special Envoy for UNHCR from 2001 to 2022, shared before-and-after images on Instagram showing the scale of damage in various areas of the strip.
The images compare Gaza's appearance before the war with its current state this summer. They show large sections of previously dense urban areas reduced to rubble, with whole neighbourhoods destroyed. Jolie cited a UN satellite analysis stating that 82% of structures in Gaza had been damaged as of June, with two-thirds of those assessed as destroyed.
Jolie emphasized the need for shelter assistance and essential items as winter approaches, noting that 1.98 million people - or 94% of Gaza's population - require aid. She also highlighted the restrictions and delays faced by humanitarian assistance and medical supplies reaching civilians.
