Angelina Jolie Exposes Gaza Destruction via Google Earth Satellite Images
A two-time Oscar winner and former UN Special Envoy Angelina Jolie has highlighted the destruction in Gaza using satellite images on Google Earth. The images show the extensive damage caused by Israel's genocidal war, which has killed over 74,000 Palestinians and injured more than 175,000 others since October 2023.
Jolie shared before-and-after images of areas near the Al-Qadisiyah School in Rafah, Khan Younis in southern Gaza, and Omar Mukhtar Street in Gaza City. The images reveal large sections of previously dense urban areas lying in ruins, with whole neighborhoods reduced to rubble.
The UN satellite analysis shows that as of June 2023, 82% of structures in Gaza had been damaged, with roughly two-thirds of them assessed as destroyed. Jolie emphasized that aid and shelter materials continue to face restrictions and delays, leaving 1.98 million people, or 94% of Gaza's population, in need of shelter assistance and essential items.
Jolie, who served as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for over 20 years, called for immediate humanitarian assistance, medical supplies, and conditions to be created to allow Palestinians to rebuild their homes, schools, hospitals, and communities. She noted that while the destruction is visible, the human impact cannot be captured by satellite imagery.
