Angolan Oil Producer Blocks Energean with $260 Million Asset Grab
An Angolan oil producer has secured Chevron's $260 million offshore asset sale in Angola by exercising its pre-emption rights as an existing partner. Etu Energias acquired Chevron's 31% operated interest in Block 14 and its 15.5% non-operated interest in the adjacent Block 14K.
The agreement, which carries a base cash price of $260 million, was initially destined for Energean, a London-listed energy company. However, Etu's pre-emption rights allowed it to match the terms offered by the prospective outside buyer, effectively blocking Energean from entering the two producing blocks.
Etu is a wholly Angolan and privately owned oil and gas company that had already expanded its position in Blocks 14 and 14K by purchasing Galp's interest in the blocks last year. The company's use of pre-emption rights was a contractual commercial decision, not an accusation of wrongdoing by Chevron or Energean.
