Appeals Court Allows Over 3,000 Lawsuits Against Tech Giants to Proceed
A federal appeals court has allowed over 3,000 lawsuits against Meta, TikTok, Google, and Snap to proceed. The companies are accused of intentionally designing their platforms to hook young users, leading to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
The ruling came after the tech giants argued that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act shields them from liability for user-generated content. However, the appeals court concluded that Section 230 functions as a legal defense rather than an outright shield, allowing the lawsuits to move forward.
Meta is also facing another lawsuit, brought by 29 state attorneys general, which accuses the company of harvesting and exploiting children's personal data.
