Apple Builds AI Server Using Own Chips, Talks Partnership With Nvidia
Apple is working on an enterprise AI server built around its own M8 Ultra chips, which are expected to launch in 2029. The company has been in talks with Nvidia about using their NVLink Fusion interconnect platform to link the chips together.
The planned server would come in two configurations - one pairing two M8 Ultra chips and one pairing four - and would target AI developers, businesses, and governments. Some Apple engineers believe that Nvidia's NVLink Fusion represents the best available connectivity solution for this project.
New Apple CEO John Ternus was a backer of the server project at its inception roughly a year ago while leading Apple's hardware engineering division, according to The Information. His continued support is seen as a key reason the project has momentum.
