Apple Cuts Jobs in Siri Overhaul Amid Reliability Concerns
Apple is undertaking significant restructuring within its software teams, cutting over 200 positions, including around 100 from Siri and machine learning groups. This move comes as the company bets on a rebuilt Siri with enhanced personal context awareness and cross-app capabilities.
The layoffs are seen by some as a necessary step to streamline operations and focus resources on Apple's new AI architecture, which prioritizes on-device processing. However, this strategy also carries risks, including concentration of efforts on an unproven technology that has already missed its reliability bar once.
Tim Cook has expressed confidence in the revamped Siri system, citing 'overwhelmingly positive' developer feedback and 'phenomenal' early user reviews. Nevertheless, Apple's reliance on this new architecture raises concerns about the company's ability to deliver on its promises if the technology fails to meet expectations.
