Apple Eyes Return to Enterprise Server Market with AI-Powered Servers
Apple is considering re-entering the enterprise server market after a 15-year hiatus, according to a report by The Information. The proposed move would involve developing AI servers using custom silicon and Nvidia's NVLink technology, which allows for high-speed data transfer between chips.
The potential product would not be available until 2029, but it signals Apple's willingness to invest in AI architecture and use its custom-made chips in products beyond consumer devices. This move is seen as a significant shift in the company's strategy under new CEO John Ternus, who backed the initiative when it was first suggested last year.
Apple has been criticized for not investing more in AI infrastructure, unlike other tech giants such as Microsoft, Tesla, Meta Platforms, Amazon, and Alphabet. However, the company has focused on embedding AI applications on its operating systems and devices through third-party technology, avoiding massive capital expenditures.
