Apple Eyes Return to Server Hardware Market with AI-Focused Servers
Apple is reportedly considering re-entering the server hardware market after a 15-year absence. According to The Information, Apple is looking at developing its own artificial intelligence (AI) servers using custom silicon and networking technology supplied by Nvidia.
The proposed servers would combine Apple's M8 Ultra chips with Nvidia's NVLink Fusion technology to connect the chips and operate in the servers. This move would signal a significant shift in Apple's strategy, as it has been focused on consumer devices rather than enterprise hardware since 2011.
Apple staff believe that Nvidia's technology offers the best available option for their needs, but they also have the option to develop the server without NVLink. The report notes that this initiative is one of the first major actions under new CEO John Ternus, who backed the idea when it was suggested a year ago.
The servers would not be available until 2029, and it's unclear whether Apple will ultimately pursue this project. However, even if it doesn't happen, this could be an early sign of Ternus' new vision for Apple's business model.
