Apple Eyes Return to Server Market with AI-Powered M8 Chips
Apple is reportedly considering re-entering the server market with an AI server built around its 'M8' series chips. The system would be sold to outside customers and potentially bring Apple back into a business it left behind in 2011 when it discontinued Xserve.
The proposed system would target companies that want to run AI models on their own equipment, focusing on inference and generating responses from trained models. According to The Information, one option under consideration is Nvidia's NVLink Fusion technology, which provides hardware and software for exchanging data between chips.
Apple CEO John Ternus reportedly supported the initiative when work began approximately a year ago during his tenure as the company's hardware engineering chief. The project follows growing interest in Apple hardware among AI businesses, which have been buying Mac mini and Mac Studio systems in large quantities.
