Apple Investors Skeptical About Immediate Foldable iPhone Impact

Apple's highly anticipated launch event is just around the corner, and tech enthusiasts are buzzing about the potential unveiling of its first foldable iPhone. However, institutional investors remain skeptical that this new hardware will be an immediate catalyst for Apple stock (AAPL) to rise.

Ahead of the big event, AAPL shares have already climbed over 15% since the start of this year (2026). But market experts warn that the launch could turn into a 'sell-the-news' event, where traders lock in profits following recent rallies and enthusiasm is muted.

Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan notes that AAPL shares have declined after 10 out of 24 major product launches since 2007, while staying roughly flat on five other occasions. Tidal Financial senior strategist Michael Khouw also expects the stock to do little following the announcement, saying 'I'm not expecting the stock to do a whole heck of a lot coming out of the announcement. It usually doesn’t.'

Instead of focusing on the form factor of the foldable iPhone, experts are intently looking at underlying financial metrics, pricing power, and artificial intelligence (AI) integration. Freedom Capital's head of tech research Paul Meeks recently expressed skepticism over the form factor, saying 'a very expensive foldable phone does not get me jazzed, Samsung has had one for years.'

MoffettNathanson estimates that a premium 'Ultra' foldable would require a price tag close to $2,500 to avoid diluting AAPL's standard 40% product margins. Consumer adoption could face structural volume limitations due to the luxury price tag testing brand loyalty.
