Apple Leverages Google's Gemini for Siri Revamp
Apple's Siri AI system has been revamped in collaboration with Google, using its Gemini-based models. The partnership was announced on January 12, 2026, and is reportedly worth around $1 billion per year to Google.
The new Siri AI stack consists of five custom Apple Foundation Models trained on proprietary data, with four of them being optimized for Apple Silicon and the fifth running on Google-dedicated servers. This setup allows Siri to handle requests that never leave the phone, as well as those requiring extra horsepower from Private Cloud Compute servers.
Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, clarified the distinction between training on Gemini models versus deploying the Gemini app itself. He stated that Apple doesn't have the Gemini app as its own app, and that the underlying models are a result of their collaboration with Google.
