Apple Names John Ternus as New CEO Amid Optimism on Product Launch
Apple has completed its first top management transition since 2011 with John Ternus succeeding Tim Cook as CEO. Ternus, who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 and joined Apple's product design team in 2001, will lead the company's hardware engineering efforts. He previously led teams responsible for Mac external displays, AirPods, Mac, iPad, iPhone, and ultimately the entire hardware engineering system.
The market is positive about Ternus's appointment, with Bank of America maintaining its 'Buy' rating and $380 price target, Citi maintaining a 'Buy' rating and $315 price target, and JPMorgan expressing a 'positive view' on the transition. Analyst Wamsi Mohan noted that Ternus may evaluate increasing AI infrastructure spending, as Apple's decision to abandon its net cash neutral target could signal increased R&D spending.
The company will hold its autumn new product launch event on September 9, themed 'Surprise and Shine.' The market expects this launch to break Apple's decade-plus iPhone release cadence, with only the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and the first foldable iPhone being released. Apple's stock price has reclaimed key levels but is still short of its all-time high of $344.56.
