Apple Ordered to Pay $5.7 Billion for Haptic Tech Infringement
Apple owes $5.7 billion in damages to San Diego-based Taction Technology over its use of haptic technology in iPhones and Apple Watches.
The case centers on Apple's Taptic Engine, a haptic actuator that creates the taps, vibrations, and other tactile sensations users feel when interacting with an iPhone or Apple Watch.
Taction's 2021 complaint said Apple had incorporated technology covered by two of its patents into the Taptic Engine. The patents cover systems designed to produce more precise vibrations by controlling the movement of a mass inside a haptic actuator.
A federal jury in San Diego found Apple infringed two Taction Technology patents covering haptic technology, while noting that it did not find Apple's infringement to be willful.
