Apple Preps Fix for Mac Mail After Microsoft Axes EWS Connection
Apple is working on a fix for Mac Mail access as Microsoft retires Exchange Web Services (EWS), an older connection method used by Apple's Mac apps. The disruption affects work or school accounts hosted through Microsoft's Exchange Online service, which provides email, calendars, and other account information.
The problem involves EWS, which Microsoft began disabling in October 2026 as part of its plan to phase out the connection method. This change will be fully implemented by April 2027. Any organization using EWS for their Mac apps may experience similar problems depending on their settings.
Microsoft says administrators can temporarily keep approved apps connected before the full shutdown of EWS. However, Apple has announced that a future macOS 27 update will move all five affected Mac apps to Microsoft's replacement connection method, known as Exchange ActiveSync. This change is unaffected by the EWS shutdown and only applies to iPhones and iPads.
