Apple Stores Some iCloud Files on Google Cloud Platform
Apple has quietly partnered with Google Cloud Platform to store some of its iCloud files. The admission was made in Apple's latest iOS Security Guide, which confirms that iCloud services rely on third-party storage services like S3 from Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform.
The guide states that all items stored on iCloud, including contacts, calendars, photos, and documents are broken into chunks, encrypted, and then stored on Google Cloud Platform without any user-identifying information. This move marks a shift in Apple's storage strategy, with the company previously indicating reliance on Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
While Apple has not specified when or why it switched to Google Cloud services, the company joins nearly 300 other corporations that use the platform, including prominent customers like Coca Cola, Best Buy, Niantic, Spotify, Motorola, and Airbus.
