Apple Takes Aim at Data Centers with Cheaper Desktop AI Powerhouse
Apple's new desktop computers are hitting the market today, promising to revolutionize AI computing and potentially disrupt the data center industry. The Mac Minis and Mac Studios can handle intense AI tasks locally, making them cheaper than renting data centers from cloud leaders like OpenAI or Anthropic. According to Apple's chief hardware officer, Johny Srouji, 'Once you have the machine on your desk, you've paid for it. And I believe we provide absolutely great value, not only in terms of performance, but cost.'
The new Macs are aimed at corporate America, which is increasingly relying on AI to carry out complex tasks. However, the construction of data centers has raised concerns over energy usage and living nearby. Apple's move may be seen as a response to these growing environmental and social concerns.
Rivals like Nvidia and Microsoft are also rolling out new desktop machines with AI features. Microsoft plans to roll out its AI features into a super app for Windows, while Nvidia is adding AI capabilities to its own products.
