Apple Taps Own Chips for M8 Enterprise AI Server Launch in 2029
Apple is working on an enterprise AI server called M8 that will use its own Ultra chips. The project aims to launch in 2029 and has been led by Apple's hardware engineering division, which has held talks with Nvidia about using their NVLink Fusion interconnect platform.
The M8 server will come in two configurations: one pairing two M8 Ultra chips and another pairing four. It targets AI developers, businesses, and governments and could be a significant development for the tech industry.
According to The Information, Apple engineers believe that Nvidia's NVLink Fusion is the best available connectivity solution for this project. This move reflects a genuine commercial imperative as Mac was Apple's fastest-growing product segment in its most recently reported quarter, with revenue surging nearly 29% to $10.4 billion.
John Ternus, the new CEO of Apple, was a backer of the server project at its inception roughly a year ago while leading Apple's hardware engineering division. His continued support is seen as a key reason the project has momentum.
