Apple Ternus Era Begins: Can Hardware Innovation Drive Growth at $4.7 Trillion Market Cap?
Apple's top management transition is complete, with Tim Cook stepping down as CEO and John Ternus taking over. This marks the end of Cook's 15-year tenure at Apple.
Cook led Apple to become one of the world's most profitable tech companies through supply chain management, services, and ecosystem expansion. During his time, annual revenue grew from $108 billion in fiscal year 2011 to over $416 billion in fiscal year 2025, with market capitalization expanding from approximately $350 billion to more than $4 trillion.
Ternus has a hardware background, having joined Apple in 2001 and participating in the launch of product lines such as the iPad and AirPods. As CEO, he will focus on driving growth through innovation, particularly with the company's attempts to expand its product boundaries with foldable iPhones, smart glasses, and other wearable devices.
However, Apple faces a pressing issue with artificial intelligence, which has seen competitors like Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Amazon invest heavily in building models and data centers. Apple's reliance on external partners for AI foundation models may be both a weakness and an opportunity for Ternus to embed AI into new device form factors.
