Apple Under Fire in India Over iOS 18 Update Troubles
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) in India is investigating Apple's software warranty terms after receiving complaints about the iOS 18 update. The regulator alleges that the update caused problems such as display and microphone malfunctions, which led some consumers to be charged for repairs.
The CCPA issued a notice to Apple in 2025, asking for details on how it had addressed these issues. However, nearly a year later, the matter has been escalated to the Investigation Wing, with the regulator alleging violations of consumer rights.
Apple has defended its software warranty terms, stating that its licence agreements specify that the software is provided without any warranty. The company claims that only about 11% of iPhones were still running iOS 18 as of June 2026, and that it had found no systemic issues or safety concerns during testing.
Replacing an iPhone 15 screen costs around Rs.27,900, according to a Reuters report. The CCPA is examining whether it is fair for consumers to bear these costs when the alleged trigger was Apple's own software, and whether the company's terms and repair practices amount to an unfair trade practice.
