Apple retail employees have been instructed to warn customers against attempting walk-in purchases of the iPhone Duo on its launch day, Friday, October 23. Staff members told MacRumors that there will likely be no stock available for in-store purchases, advising customers without pre-orders to avoid disappointment. Apple's online store suggests checking back on Saturday, October 24 for pickup availability, though this does not guarantee stock will be available.
The shortage of the iPhone Duo has been anticipated for some time. Production issues were reported as early as September, with Nikkei Asia noting that only a few hundred devices were being produced daily in late August. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman later revealed that Apple had considered delaying the launch to November due to supply constraints. Despite these challenges, Apple managed to assemble enough inventory to proceed with the October 23 release, though supply remains extremely limited.
Pre-orders opened earlier this week, and delivery estimates quickly extended beyond launch day. Within 30 minutes, all configurations in Apple's U.S. online store showed January 25 shipping estimates, effectively making the device sold out for Christmas through Apple's online store. Apple described the demand as "nothing short of extraordinary" in a statement to the Financial Times, emphasizing their efforts to get devices to customers as quickly as possible.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States, with the first pre-order deliveries scheduled for October 23. The device features a matte nano-texture display and four cameras, including a rear 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera and a rear 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera. Despite its high price and advanced features, the iPhone Duo comes with nearly 40 compromises compared to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, spanning camera capabilities, usability, and ownership costs.
