Apple's $1 Billion AI Bet: Is it a Smart Move or a Risky Gamble?

Apple Inc.'s decision to license its AI from Alphabet Inc., which powers a revamped Siri, has raised concerns among investors. The most valuable company on the planet is reportedly paying around $1 billion annually for Google's Gemini model.

The move has led some to question whether Apple is falling behind in the race to build powerful AI models. Historically, Apple prides itself on controlling every layer of its products, but now it seems content to rent technology from a rival.

However, optimists argue that Apple doesn't need to compete with hyperscalers like Google and Amazon to win the AI infrastructure war. Rather than burning tens of billions competing in the expensive arms race, Apple can act as a gateway for consumers to access the best models, taking a toll on every transaction.

Apple's Services business has become its crown jewel, generating record revenue at nearly double the margins of its hardware division. However, if consumers increasingly pay for AI services directly, bypassing the App Store, Apple could find itself cut out of the very transactions it hopes to profit from.
