Apple's Anti-AI Position Becomes Market Liability

AAPL AMZN MSFT

Apple's recent struggles in the stock market can be attributed to its stance against artificial intelligence (AI). The company, which has opted for partnerships over costly computing infrastructure, was once seen as a safe haven amidst AI spending concerns. However, with Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet's reassuring earnings reports, investors have rotated back into perceived AI winners.

Since reaching a record high on July 28, Apple shares have dropped around 10% due to the company's disappointing earnings. Meanwhile, the technology industry is experiencing a reversal of fortunes, with the Nasdaq 100 Index up 6.6% and the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index (SOX) advancing 10% over the past three weeks.

Apple's correlation to the S&P 500 has dropped to zero, its lowest since 2013, while its correlation to the SOX is now negative. This detachment from the broader market can be attributed to Apple's unique position as a non-AI player in an industry where AI spending dominates.
