Apple’s Smart Display Could Challenge Google’s Smart Home Dominance
Apple is reportedly preparing to launch two variants of a smart display this month, marking a significant expansion into the smart home market. The move comes as part of a broader home refresh, including updates to iOS 27 and the introduction of a new Apple TV and HomePod mini. While Google and Amazon have dominated the smart home space for years, Apple’s entry could shake things up, particularly if it addresses key shortcomings in its current ecosystem.
One of Apple’s potential advantages is its focus on local control. Unlike Google Home, which relies heavily on cloud-based operations, Apple’s HomeKit requires local communication and control. This means that HomeKit and Matter accessories can function without an internet connection, a feature that could give Apple an edge over Google’s Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max, which lack standalone, on-device capabilities.
Another key area where Apple could differentiate itself is video calling. The rumored smart display is said to feature a front-facing FaceTime camera, microphones, and speakers. Unlike Google’s Nest Hub Max, which has an underutilized camera primarily used for Google Meet, Apple’s integration of FaceTime could make video calling more appealing and practical for users.
Sound quality is another critical factor. While Google’s smart displays have decent speakers, they are not particularly notable. Apple’s smart display is rumored to have a metal, round base with multiple speaker holes, suggesting a potential focus on audio quality. If Apple delivers on this, it could further challenge Google’s offerings in the smart home market.
