ASTA Petitions Amex to Restore Advisor Access to Privileges Programs
The American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) has launched a petition to urge American Express to restore third-party travel advisor access to its Privileges programs. The change, which took effect on September 15, requires Platinum and Centurion cardmembers to book directly through American Express Travel to receive qualifying card benefits.
Under the updated policy, cruises and travel packages booked through independent advisors, online travel agencies, or other third-party channels no longer qualify for perks such as onboard cruise credits (up to $300) and premium amenities. This has left many luxury travel advisors in an awkward position when explaining why card benefits cannot be applied to advisor-managed itineraries.
ASTA's petition argues that the policy change limits consumer choice and disrupts long-standing relationships between advisors and clients who pay high annual credit card fees specifically to enjoy those travel perks. The association is urging Amex to establish a verified pathway that allows professional advisors to book eligible benefits on behalf of mutual clients.
