Atlanta Launches First Climate Week to Boost Sustainability Efforts
Atlanta is set to host its inaugural Climate Week from October 10 to October 15, 2026. The six-day event will feature a mix of panels, a documentary premiere, nature hikes, and corporate showcases aimed at advancing the city’s sustainability goals. The week kicks off with a community event outside the Patagonia store on the Atlanta BeltLine, focusing on preserving the urban tree canopy along a key pedestrian corridor.
The event is part of the global Climate Week Network, which spans over 30 cities and provides shared resources for local organizers. Atlanta’s iteration includes participation from major Georgia companies like Coca-Cola, Rivian, SCAD, Delta, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and Cherry Street Energy. The week’s main innovation event will take place at SCAD on October 12, alongside a nature hike at Lake Allatoona and the Climate Resilient Atlanta Roadshow, which aligns with the city’s updated climate blueprint, Climate Resilient ATL.
Despite ambitious targets, Atlanta’s progress on emissions reduction has been mixed. As of August 2026, the city had achieved a 21% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2019 levels, falling short of its 25% interim goal for 2025. The city continues to support youth-led climate projects, having secured its third consecutive Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund grant in August 2026.
One of the week’s highlights is the premiere of A Resilient Future, a 50-minute documentary screening on October 11 at Tara Theatre. The film explores how everyday landscapes can address flooding, heat, and water quality challenges. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Brandy Hall, founder of Shades of Green Permaculture. Climate Week will conclude on October 15 with the Southface Visionary Awards, honoring sustainability leaders at the Georgia Aquarium.
