Atlantic's Google Traffic Subscriptions Rise Amid Referral Decline
The Atlantic's CEO Nicholas Thompson revealed that despite Google referrals to the publication decreasing, it has seen an increase in subscribers from Google traffic. The news comes as many in the industry face declining referral numbers. According to Thompson, Google is now sending fewer visitors who don't end up subscribing.
The Atlantic currently boasts 1.6 million paid subscribers and has been profitable since 2024. The publication's revenue streams include micropayments from AI startup Parallel Web Systems, which rewards unique and valuable content. This arrangement differs from the fixed-fee licensing model typically used in AI deals.
Thompson emphasized that The Atlantic set boundaries when signing with OpenAI, including limits on summarization and quoting authors to prevent AI-generated content from replacing human writers. He expressed surprise at the low traffic directed back to The Atlantic from ChatGPT and stressed the importance of a fair exchange of value in any partnership.
