Auburn Tampons Factory Expands with $40M Warehouse Project
Tambrands Inc., owned by consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble, is planning a $40 million expansion of its Auburn factory. The project involves building two new warehouses on the property, adding 109,000 square feet to the facility. This will enable Tambrands to store raw materials and finished products on-site, reducing truck traffic in the area.
The proposal was given conditional approval by the planning board, pending approval of National Resources Protection Act applications with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The new warehouses will be used for storage, but production capacity at the plant will not increase. In fact, Tambrands has invested over $350 million in upgrading the facility since Procter & Gamble acquired it in 1997.
The expansion is expected to total approximately 137,950 square feet of impervious area, or 3.17 acres. As a significant taxpayer in Auburn, Tambrands currently pays around $1.18 million in real estate taxes on its taxable property valued at over $63.5 million. The project still requires approval from the Maine DEP and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
