Australia Introduces 'No Further Stay' Rule for Visitor Visas
Australia's Department of Home Affairs has introduced a new condition for visitor visas, effective at some point in the future, which prohibits holders from applying to remain in the country.
The 'No Further Stay' rule is part of broader migration reform efforts aimed at addressing what Minister Tony Burke described as a 'double standard' in the current system. According to Burke, the condition establishes clarity of intent by requiring visitors to apply for temporary or permanent visas according to their actual intentions.
The No Further Stay condition will not affect those already in Australia or those with a protection visa application. Ministerial Direction 119, which prioritizes law enforcement, defence, healthcare, teaching, and construction occupations, has been in effect since July this year.
